A PRECARIEDADE DO TRANSPORTE RODOVIÁRIO BRASILEIRO PARA O ESCOAMENTO DA PRODUÇÃO DE SOJA DO CENTRO-OESTE: SITUAÇÃO E PERSPECTIVAS AgEcon
Capacle, Vivian Helena; Ramos, Pedro.

Cumulative Effects of Barriers on the Movements of Forest Birds Ecology and Society
St. Clair, Colleen Cassady; University of Alberta; cstclair@ualberta.ca.
Although there is a consensus of opinion that habitat fragmentation has deleterious effects on animal populations, primarily by inhibiting dispersal among remaining patches, there have been few explicit demonstrations of the ways by which degraded habitats actually constrain individual movement. Two impediments are primarily responsible for this paucity: it is difficult to separate the effects of habitat fragmentation (configuration) from habitat loss (composition), and conventional measures of fragmented habitats are assumed to be, but probably are not, isotropic. We addressed these limitations by standardizing differences in forest cover in a clearly anisotropic configuration of habitat fragmentation by conducting a homing experiment with three species...

Escobal D'Angelo, Javier; Ponce, Carmen.

Fast and furious: a look at the death of animals on the highway MS-080, Southwestern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Carvalho,Naira C. de; Bordignon,Marcelo O.; Shapiro,Julie T..
Several factors, such as hunting and the pet trade, are responsible for the worldwide decline of wildlife populations. In addition, fatal collisions with vehicles on highways have also taken one of the largest tolls. This study aimed to quantify the richness and abundance of vertebrate roadkill along highway MS-080 in Mato Grosso do Sul, Central-West Brazil. We compare the amount of roadkill to the distance between cities, moon phases and the flow of vehicles on the highway. Samples were collected weekly between March and September 2011, totaling 257 individuals, belonging to 32 families and 52 species, resulting in an index of 0.13 individuals hit/km. Birds were the most frequently hit taxa, followed by mammals. The most affected species was Cariama...

Pathways affect vegetation structure and composition in the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Silva,Bruna Gonçalves da; Castello,Ana Carolina Devides; Koch,Ingrid; Silva,Wesley Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT Although impacts generated by gaps can affect vegetation, few studies have addressed these impacts in the Atlantic Forest. Our aim was to investigate the effects of pathways of varying widths on vegetation structure and composition, considering dispersal syndromes, diversity, life forms, successional categories and threatened and exotic species occurrence in the Atlantic Forest. We studied three pathways with widths of 2, 10 and 20 m, intersecting a protected area in southeastern Brazil. To assess edge effects, plots were established adjacent to paths (edge) and 35 m from the edge (neighborhood), and in a control area without pathways. Wider pathways (10 and 20 m) exhibited reduced tree height and diameter, high liana density, exotic species, and...

Road Development, Economic Growth, and Poverty Reduction in China AgEcon
Fan, Shenggen; Chan-Kang, Connie.
In 1978, China initiated its economic and agricultural policy reforms. The ensuing rapid economic growth led to transportation shortages and congestion problems and increased the demand for roads. Since 1985 the government has given high priority to road development, particularly the construction of high-quality roads such as highways and freeways. While the construction of high-quality roads has taken place at a remarkably rapid pace, the construction of lower-quality and mostly rural roads has been slow. This study evaluates the contribution of roads to economic growth and poverty reduction in China. It disaggregates road infrastructure into different classes of roads to account for quality, and then estimates the impact of road investments on overall...

Spatial and temporal evolution of family-farming land use in the Tapajós region of the Brazilian Amazon Acta Amazonica
ROZON,Christine; LUCOTTE,Marc; DAVIDSON,Robert; PAQUET,Serge; OESTREICHER,Jordan Sky; MERTENS,Frédéric; PASSOS,Carlos José SOUSA; ROMANA,Christine.
Pressures on the Brazilian Amazon forest have been accentuated by agricultural activities practiced by families encouraged to settle in this region in the 1970s by the colonization program of the government. The aims of this study were to analyze the temporal and spatial evolution of land cover and land use (LCLU) in the lower Tapajós region, in the state of Pará. We contrast 11 watersheds that are generally representative of the colonization dynamics in the region. For this purpose, Landsat satellite images from three different years, 1986, 2001, and 2009, were analyzed with Geographic Information Systems. Individual images were subject to an unsupervised classification using the Maximum Likelihood Classification algorithm available on GRASS. The classes...

The benefits of rural roads: enhancing income opportunities for the rural poor AgEcon
Escobal D'Angelo, Javier; Ponce, Carmen.
Most studies have measured the benefits of rehabilitated rural roads by focusing on reductions in monetary or time costs needed to access product and factor markets or key public social services. This paper complements these studies by evaluating their impact on key welfare indicators such as income or consumption. Looking at rural households living in some of the poorest districts of Peru, this study compares (using propensity score matching techniques) households located near rehabilitated roads to suitable controls. Results show that rehabilitated road accessibility can be related to changes in income sources, as the rehabilitated road enhances non-agricultural income opportunities, especially from wage-employment sources. The study also finds that...
